SAFE's Whole Leaf Green Barley vs. Juice Confections
Green barley juice confections are produced by means of a spray drying process using heat.
Additives are used in the production of these products which can contain
up to 25% maltodextrin sugars and 20% cooked rice. The Australian Green Barley powder is organically
grown, dried at body temperature and slowly ground into a microfine
powder. It does not contain any additives. We believe that
this natural
wholefood product is superior to dried juice confections.
AUSTRALIAN GREEN BARLEY:
Fact: Australian Green
Barley is a wholefood and not
a confection, as it does not contain artificial
additives, sugars (maltodextrin), chemical substances and preservatives.
Fact: It is grown in what is recognised
worldwide as a relatively unpolluted and safe area of the planet
Earth.
Fact:
It is grown without the use of toxic chemicals in rich and fertile
soils.
Fact: It is harvested
before the jointing stage (before the seed pods form at the
base of the plant) and at its nutritional peak, and is dried
without delay at body temperature to preserve all nutrients,
including enzymes and chlorophyll. The drying process
takes place in the growing area.
Fact: It is then ground
without the use of heat or friction by a 'world first' powdering
method, resulting in a new generation microfine powder enabling
all nutrients to be accessed by the digestive system.
This process also takes place within close proximity to the
growing area.
Fact: The tender young
fibres contain both soluble and insoluble fibres. The
very valuable soluble fibres contain most of the mineral content
of the plant, which the digestive system is readily able to
access through the usual digestive processes. Remember
- the remaining full spectrum naturally occurring nutrients
are instantly accessible to the digestive system, beginning
in the mouth. The very small amount of insoluble fibre
remaining has a very positive effect on the colon, gently cleaning
and massaging it into better shape.
It is regrettable that some marketing the
imported 'juice' product feel so threatened by the pure Australian
product that they attempt to gain a market advantage by denigrating this
wonderful God given natural food.
IMPORTED 'JUICE' PRODUCTS:
Fact: These products
typically contain up to 25% maltodextrin. This is a combination
of maltose and dextrin, both simple sugars. Clever marketing
and hype may get away with calling this a complex sugar, but
it is certainly not classed as a complex
carbohydrate. The Australian and New Zealand Food Authority
officially class maltodextrin as sugar.
Fact: The imported juice
products contain approximately identical amounts of crude fibre
as the Australian Green Barley. However, all of this fibre
can be from the addition of cooked brown rice in the imported
'juice' product. Cooked rice loses the benefit of the
water soluble B vitamins inherent in rice, added to which, the
fibre from rice does not contain all the wonderful nutrients
which the tender shoots of barley contain in the comparable
volume of fibre from within the shoots.
Fact: The imported 'juice'
products are often described by those who market them as 'pure
juices'. This is demonstrably not so.
The inclusion of the above two ingredients and extracts from
the patents for the manufacture of these products proves the
point. (The patents are freely available from the USA
Patents Office for a small charge, and the information is available
to all interested parties.)
Fact:
Green Barley was first researched through the Wilderness Community
Education Foundation in the 1920's. It is not a Japanese
discovery. The process for juicing only was patented by
the Japanese.

Statement from SAFE re Pure, Wholeleaf Green Barley
...Our Green Barley is harvested, dehydrated and powdered in the same
locality and is not subjected to any heat, friction or other
processes which could cause loss of nutrients. Green Barley is a natural
time release food, with the soluble portion being utilised immediately by the
body and the digestible portion providing hours of sustained nutrient
release. The equipment which concentrates the breen barley shoots into a
microfine powder is a world first (we will not lose this one to overseas), and
all Australians and worldwide connoisseurs of Green Barley should rejoice in the
capability of this technology to provide optimum nutrition in its most natural
form.
We have been concerned that some new customers become confused when they read
or hear false claims. To dispel the untruthful information that may have
been imparted to you, the managing director of SAFE writes as follows:
"What's the difference between green barley juice and SAFE Green
Barley? Answer: SAFE Green Barley is natural - the way nature
intended to supply us with nutrients. An American 'juice' type company
claims to have spent $25 million dollars on processes which ultimately de-nature
their product. A search of their Japanese/USA patent reveals a cocktail of
chemicals used in the process. Maltodextrin (added to the American juiced
product) is classified as a sugar by the Australian and New Zealand Food
Authority - not a complex carbohydrate. It is ridiculous for the
distributors to say that foods should contain added maltodextrin sugars,
particularly as we are aware that diabetes and other sugar related diseases are
on the increase. Unfortunately for the consumer, not only is their product
de-natured, but production costs and the hype necessary to market it are passed
on to the customer.
SAFE's natural product is economical and provides the
fibres necessary to cleanse the colon. Under 1000 times magnification, our
Green Barley presents as brilliant green 'fluffy clouds', and the small amount
of microfine fibrous material is smooth and rounded. (SAFE Green Barley
analyses at around 11% fibre - a large portion of which is digestible
fibre). We have many testimonials from people who have overcome bowel
problems as a result of consuming our product. The mocrofine fibres of the
Green Barley powder gently scrub, cleanse and sooth the colon to assist with
healing. Unfortunately, the health regulations prevent us from using these
testimonials. The distributors of the American product attempt to
denigrate our product by stating that grass fibres are not beneficial to the
intestine and that only cows, which have four stomachs, are equipped to eat
grass. This is untrue. Cows are capable of eating large indigestible
fibres, such as stubble. Many single stomached animals, e.g. horses,
kangaroos and even our pet dogs and cats eat tender shoots of grass. SAFE
Green Barley powder is produced only from tender young plants, grown in
Victoria, dried within an hour of harvest to prevent loss of nutrients, and then
ground into the fine powder which makes our product the best natural Green
Barley powder available."

You can fool all of the people some of the time,
but...
SAFE
(Sustainable Agriculture & Food Enterprises) has always been of the opinion
that healthy competition is good for everyone. However, underhand and deceitful
competition is not! Some unscrupulous distributors of the imported juiced barley
product are persisting in distributing misleading information to attempt to gain
a market advantage.
This photograph, together with its accompanying caption which is currently
being shown to SAFE members and others, is purported to be a glass of their
product compared to our pure and natural Green Barley. They are implying that
their product is superior because their product does not settle out.
We don't apologise for our Green Barley settling out. It is a reflection of
its purity. Bear in mind that both of the above products contain fibre (the
imported product from an addition of brown rice). If a 'fresh juice' product
does not settle out, there must have been alterations or additives which prevent
the natural settling process. Can such a product possibly be put into the same
category as our pure and natural Green Barley? No it cannot!
We will not go into what the imported product contains, but we will highlight
what our totally natural Green Barley does not contain. Our Green Barley product
does not contain thickeners, i.e. methyl cellulose, carboxylmethyl cellulose,
gum arabic, tragacanth, sodium aglinate, calcium alginate, or water-solubilized
matters such as skeleton or cartilage of animal, fishes or the like which add
texture and aid suspension. Our Green Barley also does not contain added sugars
(eg maltodextrin) which act as a thickener and preservative, nor does it contain
other preservatives such as sorbic calcium, benzoic acid, paraoxymethyl benzoate
and the like.
Other companies may use the above ingredients to keep their products in
suspension, extend shelf life and to enhance flavour, colour and texture.
Instead, our pure and natural Green Barley contains only the ingredients
supplied by nature and the soil in which it is grown. You should be very
concerned about any product that contains unnatural ingredients and does not
display the normal characteristics of a natural food. Natural products settle
out, as does ours - NATURALLY!
SAFE Newsletter - February 2001
SAFE Green Barley vs. Overseas Barley Product
SAFE Green Barley is a pure food produced as a micro-fine powder without any
additives or preservatives of any kind. We are aware that some people
marketing an overseas barley product are asserting that our pure product is
inferior to the overseas one because some hours after mixing with water ours
falls out of suspension - their product does not. This is because our
product does not contain maltodxtrin (a form of sugar), gum arabic, methyl/carboxymethyl
cellulose or any of the other additives. If our's contained these
ingredients it would stay in suspension the same as their product does! Be
aware of this marketing ploy.
Additionally, our green barley retains its integrity in humid conditions once
opened and does not go hard or lumpy, as does the imported powdered juice
product. This is because ours is unadulterated pure barley. At SAFE
we believe that our world was created with all that we could possibly require to
sustain and support us. Our 'Maker' did not intend that our vital foods
should be unnecessarily processed or contaminated with additives - indeed, it is
man's intervention in our nutrition which has contributed to so much ill health.
Maybe animals are much more sensible than we, as they look to nature - they eat
whole grass if they are sick. Perhaps we have to re-learn what nature has
to offer us and forget the so called 'clever stuff'.
