Consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of lung cancer in current smokers, reveals a recent study conducted by Frederike L. Büchner, of the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven, Netherlands, and colleagues.
Although the best way to cut down the risk is to quit smoking, eating a diverse mix of veggies may offer some protection.
"It is important to realize the risk reduction one can achieve by eating a greater variety of fruits and vegetables will be minor in relation to quitting smoking
," stressed study leader Dr. Bas Bueno-de-Mesquita.
