As the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada, colorectal cancer is a disease that is closely linked to a western world lifestyle. However, it is possible to prevent the majority of colon cancers by way of simple modifications to how we live.
A large number of studies show that colon cancer is directly tied to the lifestyles of people in industrialized countries. This fact is illustrated by the high incidence of this cancer in developed areas (North America, Australia and Europe in particular), with residents there up to 25 times more affected by this cancer than they are in continents like Africa.
In barely 20 years, between 1983 and 2002, the incidence of colorectal cancer skyrocketed in a number of developing countries, due in large part to the fact that these countries began to adopt lifestyle characteristics similar to industrialized countries.
