Daily pill that can stop the ringing in your ears(dailymail.co.uk)

A mineral found in spinach and other green leafy vegetables is being used to treat people with chronic tinnitus — characterised by an inexplicable ringing or buzzing in the ears.

Researchers believe the mineral magnesium plays a key role in protecting our hearing system and that supplements taken daily will reduce tinnitus.

This condition is believed to permanently affect one in ten adults, with one in three people experiencing it at some point in their life.

The clinical trial of 40 patients, at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, America, is due to start this month.

Broccoli Fights Cancer By Clearing Bad Tumor Suppressors (scientificamerican.com)

Full time position available in Brisbane
to join our Young,
Fun and Friendly Team.

Generations of American children have been told, “Eat your broccoli!” And for decades, researchers have known that broccoli and related vegetables like cauliflower and watercress appeared to lower the risk of some cancers. And that compounds in the vegetables could kill cancer cells. But how the cruciferous veggies worked their medical magic was a mystery. Until now. Because researchers have figured out just what broccoli does that helps keep cancer in check. The work appears in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. [Xiantao Wang et al, Selective Depletion of Mutant p53 by Cancer Chemoprevention Isothiocyanates and Their Structure-Activity Relationships]

Proteins coded by the gene p53 help keep cancer from starting to grow. But when the p53 gene is mutated, the protection is gone. Mutated p53 is implicated in about half of all human cancers.

OIive Oil Reduces Heart Disease in Women (technorati.com)

Reuter’s news reported yesterday that women who eat leafy vegetables and at least 3 tablespoons of olive oil a day showed a 40% reduction in heart disease compared to women who ate the least or no olive oil.

The study implemented by Dr. Domenico Palli at the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute in Florence reinforces the important role of micro-nutrients in vegetables.

Foliate, potassium, and anti-oxidants are present in all leafy green vegetables and are considered a key element in fighting elevated homocystene levels which damage arterial linings. Potassium reduces blood pressure, which in turns reduces the stress on the cardio vascular system.

Health Benefits of Cruciferous Vegetables (eatdrinkbetter.com)

A discussion on our Facebook page the other night reminded me about my obsession with cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy…we eat one of those tasty cabbage relatives almost every day around here!

Did you know that cruciferous vegetables were loaded with health benefits? I had a vague idea that they were some kind of super veggie but didn’t know any details. A little digging turned up a slough of information!
Cruciferous vegetables are in the cabbage family. On top of the veggies listed above, some other common cruciferous vegetables are cabbage, collard greens, kohlrabi, mustard greens, rutabaga, turnips, arugula, horseradish, and watercress.

Over at WebMD, there’s a very comprehensive article about cruciferous veggies and their superpowers. Here are a few of the highlights:

Seven Ways to Reduce Liver Cancer Risk (.liversupport.com)

Making a collection of lifestyle changes may enable those with liver disease to singlehandedly prevent their illness from progressing to liver cancer.

by Nicole Cutler, L.Ac.

Millions of Americans are living with chronic liver disease. While a cure is beyond the reach of many affected individuals, most can still live a normal life by preventing their disease from advancing. Regardless of the cause, there is a goal uniting everyone affected with chronic liver disease – to prevent the illness from progressing. If liver disease progresses to its most severe stage, then the implications are typically serious. One of the possible outcomes of end-stage liver disease, liver cancer presents a major concern. Experts advise seven lifestyle approaches to reduce the likelihood of developing liver cancer.

With chronic liver disease, damage to liver cells can include altering the genes inside cells in a way that causes them to become cancerous. As the fifth most common cancer in the world, liver cancer is a very aggressive disease. While researchers are continuously searching and finding innovative ways to understand and fight liver cancer, only a small percentage of people diagnosed survive more than one year. Those odds increase for people whose tumors have been successfully removed.

Antioxidants, Orange and Green Vegetables Linked to Longer Life (diet-blog.com)

Unlike McDonald's, which is mostly shades of brown, new research claims colorful vegetables, specifically oranges and dark greens, maybe help extend lifespan and decrease mortality.

Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that among the 15,000 study participants (American adults, ages 20 and older) taking part in a national health survey, individuals with higher blood levels of alpha-carotene had lower overall health risks after 14 years, regardless of lifestyle habits.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables is a major risk factor for increased mortality worldwide. A 2003 WHO report claims as many as 2.7 million lives may have been saved each year, if more fruits and vegetables were consumed.

Gene markers for prostate cancer (hindustantimes.com)

Personalising a common prostate cancer test by looking at genetic variations makes it diagnosis far more accurate. Prostate cancer is among the top five cancers in men in the world, including in India. Screening using prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests is controversial at the moment because it is difficult to define normal PSA levels, so cancer is missed in some men while others get false positive results.

Fruits cut lung cancer risk (www.zeenews.com)

Consuming a variety of fruit may reduce the risk of lung cancer by up to 23 per cent, according to a new study.

Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables per day is one of the means that experts most frequently recommend for preventing cancer.

Now, the European EPIC study carried out by researchers from 10 countries has shown that, in the case of lung cancer, the important thing is not just the quantity but also the variety of fruit consumed, which can reduce the risk.

Vitamin K Necessary to Stop Cancer in its Tracks (technorati.com)

The second leading cause of death in the US is a preventable disease caused by a damaging diet of processed foods and poor lifestyle choices. Many people view cancer as inevitable having seen family members and friends succumb to the disease and believe there is little they can do to protect themselves from the `Big C`.

Our body is continually under assault from rogue cancer cells that are detected and controlled by our innate immune system. Eventually a diet of sugary processed foods and regular contact with household toxins wear down our natural defenses allowing cancer to proliferate. Vitamin K is a critical nutrient that has been shown effective in preventing a number of cancer cell lines with no toxic side effects.
