Neurodyne

Memory is something that is taken for granted until we notice we are losing our ability to recall events or information.  Every piece of information you need to remember is passed from one nerve cell to the next in the form of electrical signals.  When you make this connection repeatedly, such as when you repeat a phone number over and over again, the connection is strengthened and the information becomes part of the brain.  Over years of use, processing billions of messages, the neurons bet damaged or weakened.  Stress, free radicals and illnesses contribute to the damage.  Memory impairment results.

Neorodyne has been formulated to assist mental function, memory, learning ability and to reduce the effects of stress.  Neurodyne contains extracts of Bacopa (known as Brahmi), Ginkgo biloba, Phosphatidylserine plus vitamins to assist mental function.

Bacopa (Brahmi)

Bacopa, known as Brahmi, is a principal nerve tonic of Ayurvedic Medicine and was traditionally used for improving memory and mental capacities.  It is a valuable herb to assist with learning ability and intelligence.  In recent years it has received attention for its reputation as a 'brain tonic'.  Brahmi has been used for the treatment of epilepsy, nervous breakdown and for people feeling 'run down'.  Brahmi is also known to assist nervous exhaustion and has a sedative quality.

Bacopa's main active constituents are called Bacosides.  These chemicals have been shown to alleviate fatigue and increase stamina.  Bacosides also enhance the metabolism of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers between nerve cells, thereby increasing mental function.  They also help to keep the toxic effects of stress to a minimum.  Studies of Bacopa's effect on learning ability consistently demonstrate improved learning ability for subjects having Bacopa.  Studies indicate that the active ingredients in Bacopa, the bacosides, are beneficial for improving short-term memory.  The bacosides have also been effective in reducing amnesia.

Bacopa has demonstrated sedative activity (without affecting motor co-ordination), analgesic activity, anxiety reduction and anticonvulsant activity.  Bacopa significantly reduced anxiety and improved mental performance and memory in a group with anxiety neurosis.  It was accompanied by reduction in mental fatigue, a general feeling of well-being, improved sleep and appetite, and an increase in body weight.  Bacopa significantly improved IQ scores in 10-13 year old children.  It was particularly effective in improving visual motor function and immediate memory.  Another study involving 50 children demonstrated significant improvement in attention.

Bacopa is used as a 'brain tonic' for improving memory, concentration and learning, particularly where stress is also present.  It can assist nervous deficit due to injury, stroke and Alzheimer's disease.  Bacopa is used for people with nervous breakdown, nervous exhaustion, behavioural disorders, anxiety and conditions where anxiety may play a role, such as irritable bowel syndrome.  There are no contraindications or cautions with Bacopa.

Ginkgo biloba

One reason that people may suffer from memory problems is that they have an inadequate supply of nutrients to the brain.  Our blood nourishes and feeds every cell in our body including the brain.  A sheath called the blood-brain barrier surrounds the brain and only allows certain substances to cross it.  When the blood is too viscous, the flow of nutrient-rich blood through the barrier can decrease, leading to impaired nutrition and oxygen to the brain and decrease in function.  Ginkgo biloba aids this by increasing the circulation and oxygen supply to the brain as well as stabilizing the cell membrane of the blood brain barrier.

Correct nutrition is necessary to produce neurotransmitters.  Impairment of their function is the biochemical equivalent of an electrical short circuit.  Ginkgo biloba inhibits the enzymatic breakdown of neurotransmitters, thereby improving the transmission of nerve impulses.  Ginkgo contains Quercetin, a bioflavonoid, which has a great affinity to protect the brain against the destructive influence of free radicals.

In a study of 20 elderly patients 62-86 years of age with lack of adequate blood flow to their brain due to arteriosclerosis, 15 out of 20 patients showed improvement having Ginkgo biloba over a period as short as two weeks.  In studies that were significantly longer, the authors stated that clinical results were remarkable.  There was 80% success in 47 patients with cerebral insufficiency as measured by mental improvement, EEG and cerebral angiograms.

In other research studies, young, healthy girls having Ginkgo were shown to improve results on a test if it was consumed one hour before the test.  Alertness was shown to be better and EEG readings for people who had dementia improved.  In one study, Ginkgo was found to improve attention span, concentration, mental function, mood and memory, and also decreased anxiety in Alzheimer's disease patients.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is a phosphorus containing fat essential for healthy cell membranes throughout the body, especially in the brain.  The brain normally makes sufficient phosphatidylserine but aging and nutritional deficiencies may result in reduced levels.

Phosphatidylserine reverses the gradual loss of memory associated with age associated memory impairment.  Numerous studies have demonstrated that phosphatidylserine improves memory and thinking processes and lessens the effect of Alzheimer's disease and depression.  One study reported a 30% improvement in learning and recalling names, faces and numbers.  Other studies have reported improved recall of written information and misplaced items, better recall of recent events, improved alertness and ability to concentrate.  Lessening of apathy and withdrawal has also been noted.  Phosphatidylserine is essential to the development of flexible cell membranes allowing nutrients to easily enter the cell.

Phosphatidylserine is not abundant in common foods, so it is limited in the diet.  The body can make it only through a complex series of reactions and with substantial investment of energy.  When taken orally in supplemental form, phosphatidylserine is rapidly absorbed and readily crosses the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain.
